Abstract
Further integration of European rules for environmental impact assessment and auditing has required a survey of national legislations. Recent developments in Belgium are examined herein. "Federalization" of the country, with now five levels of authority, has resulted in a complex patchwork of "regional" laws and regulations. Whether, at some future date, they will have to be adjusted to possible further European Union directives, is unknown at present, but they must currently be lived by. Once all regions will have spelled out their rules and envisioned how these can be harmonized throughout Belgium, a clearer picture will emerge. Registration or licensing of assessors and auditors will have to take into consideration European directives and respect the precepts of open competition and free access to professions for all "European citizens".
